We sent our very own Jack Collison out to Seville to put the new Milwaukee-Eight™ engine to the test, to put these bikes through their paces via the roads of Seville! With all kinds of terrain to contend with, twists and turns and riding similar bikes from other brands, Jack officially concluded that the King is still conquering the road. After all, there is only one way to understand Harley-Davidson®, ride one!
Thursday 16th February in Seville and it was a perfect day to test out the all-new Milwaukee-eight™ touring models. I took the decision to approach every test ride from the perspective of a customer, challenging the bike to its full potential so that I could understand the bikes worth. I wanted this bike to deliver and give me the confidence to pass on to all our customers. The bike didn’t just excel and perform, it categorically ruled the touring market! I was riding several competitor bikes, from Indian motorcycles to BMW touring bikes and bikes from the Moto Guzzi range and I walked away without any hesitation that Harley-Davidson® have hit the nail on the head when it comes to delivering what we want from a touring model. They listened and certainly took note of the feedback from Rushmore and created a perfect touring bike set up…
Being a fine sunny day in Seville, heat management from the engine was going to be key in our starting and stopping areas, I found it amazing how Harley-Davidson® have engineered an engine that directs the heat away from you – something I always suffered with on the Rushmore. I took a 2016 Road Glide® Ultra around Europe last July and I suffered terribly from the heat coming from the engine in traffic, this was my only complaint from this experience as the rest of the bike was great.
I found the 2016 Road Glide® Ultra to be a true touring icon so when Harley-Davidson® announced the all-new Milwaukee-eight™ models and led us to believe how much greater the improvement would be over its predecessor, it left me sceptical as to how they could make it that much better. Well, I couldn’t agree more that the new 107” engine provided plenty of low down torque as overtaking and short bursts were relaxed, smooth and really easy, there certainly wasn’t the need to change down a gear. The suspension set-up made the bike easy to ride for entire journey and it certainly did boost my confidence whether I was travelling at low or high speeds. The suspension was easily adjustable on the rear which was a fantastic yet simple operation that can transform your ride, especially as we were riding across different terrains in, the simplicity of the rear shock adjustment was ideal. I found these to be some of the major key areas of improvement. After the ride we looked at the facts as every rider scored each bike in certain areas and the graph below shows the results. As you can see, the new Milwaukee-Eight™ has proven itself to be the best of the range and an absolute clear winner.
